Politics in a Nutshell
Republicans’ Budget to Cut Medicaid by 880 Billion [[link removed]]
On February 25th Republicans in the House of Representatives decided that the best way to pay for their tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires was to strip millions of Americans of their healthcare. That will be the inevitable, undeniable result of such devastating cuts to Medicaid. Over 650,000 Iowans [[link removed]] rely on Medicaid - parents, children, the elderly, the disabled, all will suffer under this new budget. And every single Republican representative from Iowa voted for it.
Republicans’ Budget to Cut 230 Billion from SNAP [[link removed]]
Adding further salt to the wound, not only will Republicans slash Medicaid, they’re also going to cut funding for SNAP as well. Cutting that funding will effect not only the recipients of SNAP but also farmers who provide the food for the SNAP program. Iowans rely heavily on SNAP to ensure kids and their families don’t go hungry. Over 250,000 Iowans [[link removed]] were using SNAP as of May 2023. Cutting Medicaid will take health coverage away from vulnerable Iowan families, cutting SNAP on top of it will be a blow from which they will not recover.
New Bill Allowing Trans Discrimination Passes In Iowa House [[link removed]]
With the cost of living on the rise, and cuts coming for vital Iowa services like Medicaid, Republicans in the Iowa House thought it expedient to pass a new bill that would remove civil rights protections for transgender Iowans. The bill makes it legal to discriminate against transgender Iowans in their access to medical care, shelter, safety, and economic security, and it's working its way through the Senate today.
Representatives on the Record
Senator Chuck Grassley: (202) 224-3744
What We Need To Know: does Grassley support the future cuts to Medicaid and SNAP? Hundreds of thousands of Iowa families rely on these programs to survive. Where does he stand on it? Call your senator today and ask him these questions. Don't let him stay silent on the proposed House budget because he soon may be voting on it.
Senator Joni Ernst: (202) 224-3254
What We Need To Know: does Ernst support the future cuts to Medicaid and SNAP? Hundreds of thousands of Iowa families rely on these programs to survive. Where does she stand on it? Call your senator today and ask her these questions. Don't let her stay silent on the proposed House budget because she soon may be voting on it.
Governor Kim Reynolds: (515) 281-5211
What We Need To Know: does Reynolds support the future cuts to Medicaid and SNAP? Hundreds of thousands of Iowa families rely on these programs to survive. Where does she stand on it? Will Iowa help these people when they lose their health coverage, when their children go hungry? Call your governor today and ask her these questions. Don't let her stay silent on the harm coming to Iowa.
Note From the Chair
Hey folks! Rita Hart here.
The House Republican budget passed this week, with every single Democrat voting against it. The cuts it makes to vital services like Medicaid and SNAP are troubling.
More than 650,000 Iowans rely on Medicaid - many of whom are children, elderly or disabled. Their medical and economic security is now totally at risk. In addition, cuts to SNAP will have wide-reaching economic implications because when people buy less food it hurts our farmers and the state budget. This couldn't come at a worse time as our ag economy is hurting and we've already seen massive ag-related layoffs this year.
Republicans are going to try to distract from the fact that they’re going to strip health insurance away from millions of Americans, and tens to hundreds of thousands of Iowans. They are going to take food off families’ tables. As Republicans in the news try to distract from that reality, please be ready to respond with the truth.
Our work continues,
Sincerely,
Rita Hart
