One month ago, Donald Trump retook the White House. Since then, state Democrats across the country have been mobilizing to fight back and thwart the worst of the dangerous MAGA agenda.

With Republicans holding full power in the federal government, state legislatures remain crucial battlegrounds in the fight to defend our rights and communities.

Leaders in California, Illinois, Washington, Massachusetts and others have all taken steps to “Trump proof” their states — to protect policies and priorities from the reach of the administration. These states are taking real action: stockpiling abortion pills, protecting same-sex marriage, marshaling legal resources, and more. 

While these state races are often overlooked, their significance cannot be overstated, John. States hold a consequential amount of power on issues of the economy, gun control, healthcare and much more. And oftentimes, control of these legislatures comes down to just a few districts and a few hundred votes. 

We know that continued investments in the states will be critical under a Trump presidency. State-level action will be key to defending our rights and advancing progressive power.
