Email from Children's Law Center Thankful for your support Dear friends, 29 years ago this month, three lawyers came together because they met a young girl in the foster care system. She had been trafficked from another country and became pregnant. She needed lawyers with expertise in education, health care, immigration and neglect law. Her lawyer tried to find an organization that could address her many legal needs, but none existed. Children’s Law Center was founded to address this gap. Children, families and our entire DC community are facing massive threats and challenges. But just like that day 29 years ago, I have seen our staff, partners and supporters band together knowing that DC children need us in this moment: We joined forces with Ayuda, Amica Center for Immigrant Rights, DC Affordable Law Firm and Steptoe & Johnson to create a new tool – Families United DC Metro – that helps families plan for an immigration emergency. Our team, with the help of pro bono partners, is monitoring the federal legislative and executive landscape and working with local leaders to minimize the harm for DC children as we enter a complex DC budget season. Building on our longstanding relationships with health providers, educators, government officials and other allies, we are sharing information and strategizing about how to respond to threats that impact our client community, marshal pro bono services for those newly in need and stand up for the rule of law. Today, Children’s Law Center has grown from three lawyers to more than 100 staff. Like our founders, we show up every day focused on fighting for the safety and well-being of DC children and the families and community that support them. We know that justice isn’t guaranteed. But, like our founders knew nearly three decades ago, we won’t win unless we fight. Thanks to their vision, more than 50,000 children and families have a stronger foundation of family, health and education in a city with better laws and policies to support them. And that young girl? She is a successful hairdresser with a grown daughter. We know the future is uncertain and complex, but the relationships we’ve built over the years allow us to meet this moment. Thank you for believing in us, in our mission and most importantly – in DC children.
