There was a full on assault on the 1st Amendment recently at the Capitol disguised as "campaign reform" by Speaker (King) Mike Moyle.
He brought forth two RSs (now are bills H306 and H307). Both of these bills deal with "lying" during campaign season. All sounds decent enough, right? H306 completely rewrites code on what "libel" is and also makes it a felony rather than a misdemeanor. We already have laws dealing with libel. Why this full on assault? Lies have no place in politics, and we've lost good legislators who've had mailers sent out that were complete lies... but who decides what is a lie and what is not? Do we create a Ministry of Truth to help us decide? |
