Hello friend,
HR28 -- the "trans sports ban" that in reality would be an anti-trans and impossibly expensive-to-enforce legal redefinition of sex, an incapacitation of Title IX protections for all women, and a public disinvestment from women's sports -- is up for a cloture vote today. "Cloture" for those who don't know means they will vote on whether to allow further debate (and thus, a filibuster) or whether to bring the bill to an immediate vote. If it passes cloture, Senate opposition lose their only chance to stop the bill from passing, unless enough Republicans miraculously peel off. It has already passed the House; if it passes the Senate, that's it for the safety and inclusion of trans women and girls, and for all women and girls in schools, and for women's and girls' sports (if they actually enforce karyotyping to confirm sex chromosomes.)
Please, as early as possible and as many times as possible today, call as many senators as you can and demand they vote against cloture on this bill. For some talking points, you can review this draft from a former letter campaign -- we urge you to choose what is most important to you and tailor your message. If it's a Republican or a transphobic Democrat (such as Fetterman or Murphy), we don't blame you for condemning transmisogyny, but please emphasize the disastrous costs of implementing this bill and how those costs would utterly destroy Title IX and women's and girls sports, and demand they oppose this assault on all women and girls. It would take all Republicans plus 7 Democrats to pass the cloture vote, after which it would only require 50% to pass the bill, which Republicans could accomplish alone.
You can find senators' phone numbers by state here, or find the full list here (entering 224–3121 before the last 5 digits for each listed in the "Phone" column.) Please share this urgent action request to everyone who might help, including your DSA chapter if you're a member, and in any other orgs and social groups you’re in.
In solidarity,
Metro DC DSA
