February Update from the Frontlines

Dear John,

A STRONGER FRONTLINE: EXPANDING OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MEXICAN NAVY

Poachers aren’t backing down—they’re getting smarter. Using cloned boat registrations, fake permits, and new smuggling tactics, cartel-backed operations are still trying to infiltrate protected waters. But Sea Shepherd and the Mexican Navy are fighting back.

With a landmark expansion of our partnership, we’re increasing patrols, improving detection, and strengthening enforcement to stop illegal operations before they do more damage. The Seahorse remains the only permanent presence in the Vaquita Refuge, holding the line against those who profit from extinction.

SEA LION RESCUES UNDERWAY IN 2025

At Consag Rock our teams continue freeing entangled sea lions—victims of the same illegal fishing operations that have devastated the vaquita. Working alongside CONANP and marine mammal rescue teams, we’re cutting them free and removing ghost nets.

We’re fighting on multiple fronts—against both active poaching and abandoned fishing gear. See the latest Sea Lion video here.

PROTECTING WHALES IN REVILLAGIGEDO

Sea Shepherd crews are currently deployed on a science mission in the Revillagigedo Archipelago, a key whale breeding and migration zone. This mission isn’t just research—it’s about protecting whales by gathering data to drive conservation policies and safeguard critical habitats.

Working with CONANP and scientists from UABCS, our team is tracking humpback populations, mapping migration routes, and identifying whale hotspots to prevent deadly ship strikes. By studying krill abundance and ocean temperatures, they assess how environmental changes impact whale survival.

This research has already helped establish seasonal vessel speed limits in Mexico, reducing ship collisions. With every mission, we turn science into action—keeping these waters safe for generations of whales.
