John,

Black History Month is a time to reflect on the resilience, brilliance, and contributions of Black Americans and Black Philadelphians who have shaped our city and our nation.

This month, I was reminded of the sacrifices of those who came before me — leaders, activists, and everyday citizens — who paved the way for Black Americans. Their courage and determination laid the foundation for the opportunities we have today, but we know the work is far from over. Their fight for justice, equal opportunity, and representation continues, and it is our responsibility to carry that legacy forward.

Black history isn’t just about honoring the past — it’s about recognizing the history being made every day. Black Philadelphians have shaped every part of this city, and that is something we must continue to uplift and celebrate.

As City Council President, I am committed to making sure our policies uplift and power Black communities across Philly. That means fighting for economic opportunity, quality education, safe and thriving neighborhoods, and ensuring Black families have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.

Black history is Philadelphia’s history, John. Let’s continue to celebrate our rich history, reflect on how far we’ve come, and recommit ourselves to the work still ahead.

I hope you had a happy Black History Month!

— Council President Kenyatta Johnson
