Answering your questions at our first virtual town hall!

Town Hall Recap

Thank you to everyone who joined our first virtual town hall last week! It was great to gather with hundreds of our neighbors to discuss what’s going on at home and in Washington. Thank you for submitting your questions, for taking time out of your busy day to join, and for your advocacy in helping make our district and country a better place. In Congress, I am committed to fighting for our democracy every step of the way and advocating for what’s best for Minnesota and our country.

One of the most common questions we received concerned Elon Musk’s access to Treasury Department data – and what I’m doing to stop this. Let me be upfront: I share your concerns about President Trump giving Elon Musk access to sensitive Treasury data that contains our most private personal and financial information.

That’s why I’m cosponsoring the Taxpayer Data Protection Act. This straightforward, commonsense bill would stop people with conflicts of interest or without a security clearance from accessing the highly sensitive Treasury Department payment system.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked Elon Musk from accessing sensitive Treasury Department systems and records — but I have deep concerns about the role of Elon Musk in our federal government and about the legality and transparency of his position. I have also co-sponsored the Consistent Legal Expectations and Access to Records (CLEAR) Act, which would ensure that temporary organizations, like DOGE, are bound to comply with Freedom of Information Act queries.

Hear more about what I’m doing to resist President Trump and Elon Musk’s overreach here.

Committee Assignments

I am excited to share that I have been assigned to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and the House Committee on Small Business. These assignments give me the opportunity to advocate for veterans and small businesses in our district.

House Veterans’ Affairs Committee
My family has a long history of military service. My husband is an Army combat veteran, my father-in-law was an Airborne Ranger who received a Purple Heart and Silver Star for his brave service, and my father and both my grandfathers are veterans. As a practicing physician for more than 20 years, I also spent the beginning of my career caring for veterans at a VA hospital. Minnesota’s Third District is home to nearly 28,000 veterans. Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our country, and I believe it is our duty to ensure they receive the resources they need and have earned.

I am proud to be a member of the Subcommittee on Health and the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs.

House Committee on Small Business
Small businesses are the backbone of our economy: they account for half of our gross domestic product, more than half our jobs, and three-fourths of new jobs created each year. There are more than half a million small businesses in Minnesota, and the Third District is home to many of them. I am committed to working with both Democrats and Republicans to find common ground and get things done for small business owners.

I am proud to be the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Rural Development, Energy, and Supply Chains and a member of the Subcommittee on Contracting and Infrastructure.

Key Updates:

As your Congresswoman, I am committed to fighting for our democracy and finding common ground to deliver common-sense solutions. Last month, I introduced my first bill and have been working on some bipartisan legislation – from supporting our small business owners, to supporting our students, to supporting military spouses of fallen service members. I have also fought to protect your right to personal data, protect access to critical health insurance that hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans rely on, and protect our communities from President Trump’s illegal federal funding freeze.

My First Bill Introduced in Congress Has Passed the House!

I am also excited to share that my first bill, the Rural Small Business Resilience Act, has passed the House! This bipartisan bill, co-sponsored by both Republicans and Democrats, will improve disaster assistance to small businesses in rural areas. Small businesses are the engine of our economy. As the Ranking Member of the Small Business Subcommittee on Rural Development, Energy, and Supply Chains, I will make it my mission to ensure that all small businesses have the support they need to strengthen our economy and make our communities thrive.

Stay tuned for more updates on our legislative efforts!

Use Your Voice

These are difficult times. There is so much chaos, confusion, and division. But your voice is now more important than ever. As your representative, I am committed to sharing your stories, taking your concerns to Congress, and making sure we are fighting together to uphold our democracy and make life better for all Minnesotans and Americans.

Are you concerned about how President Trump’s federal funding freeze would affect you, your business, or an organization you rely on?

Do the proposed cuts in the House Republican budget resolution threaten any programs you or your loved ones rely on?

Have you been impacted or do you have concerns about the mass firings of civil servants, the dismantling of government programs and agencies like the Department of Education, or the Trump-Vance Administration granting Elon Musk access to your most sensitive personal and financial information?

Please use this form to tell your story.

Speaking out and sharing stories is a powerful tool.

I want to hear from you. We are in this together.

In-District Updates

I love getting to come back home and meet with the incredible people and organizations here in the Third District.

With the Eden Prairie Fire Department

After President Trump attempted to freeze all federal grant, loan, and other financial assistance programs, I met with local organizations to hear firsthand how this illegal freeze would affect their work. I met with high school students at an Upward Bound program in Bloomington, rode along with first responders at the Eden Prairie Fire Department, toured Missions Inc. Programs — which provides housing, emergency shelter, and supportive services to domestic abuse survivors and those seeking recovery from substance use disorders — and spent time at Eden Prairie Planned Parenthood. All of these programs rely on federal funding to serve their communities, and I shared their frustration with the back-and-forth threats of a funding freeze from the Trump administration. To everyone who is worried about the threat of a funding freeze: I have your back, and I will do everything I can to fight this illegal action. Read more about my talks with community organizations here.

Speaking at Black Entrepreneurs Day

As a member of the House Small Business Committee, I was honored to attend Black Entrepreneurs Day at the Minnesota State Capitol. I look forward to working together to ensure that Black business owners and entrepreneurs have the resources and support they need for their businesses to strengthen, grow, and thrive.

ImageWith staff at the Minneapolis VA

I also toured the Minneapolis VA – a wonderful facility dedicated to the care of our veterans. As a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, I believe that if you serve our country, you deserve first-rate care – and the VA can and should provide it. We must protect the VA from privatization and ensure that our service members get the care and attention they deserve. Thankful to the wonderful staff and patients I met at the VA!
