Dear friend, I hope you are doing well. While I have been working hard in D.C, I have also spent time in Milwaukee, meeting with local leaders and lifting up issues and programs that are critical in our community, like education, SNAP, domestic violence, and BadgerCare.
Celebrating Young Talent in WI-04
It was awesome to meet with WI-04's Congressional App Challenge winners. These 11th grade students from Audubon Technological and Community Center: Emma Rosales, Genesis Perez, Iyanna Bates, and Chit Moe Win Oo created an app that educates users on restorative justice and how they can use it as a tool in their everyday lives. This app could be a great tool to promote healing and accountability.
Lifting up UMOS and their Critical Work
I joined UMOS Latina Resources Center Purple Dress & Tie Fundraiser, which supports their important work providing culturally competent services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. They also work teaching young people how to build healthy relationships and development of social-emotional support. UMOS depends on Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), which is depleting. It is vital that Congress replenishes this funding soon, and I will keep calling for that.
Making Direct Investments in Our Community
Community project funding projects (aka earmarks) allow members of Congress to directly improve the community. I helped secure a $1.25 million earmark, supporting a new pharmacy at the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center's Clinic on the Southside. I am so thankful for the chance to build on Sixteenth's Street amazing health care services in Milwaukee!
Supporting Education and our Local Schools
We need to be doing everything we can to lift up future generation and workforce, and that means investing in education. I met with Wauwatosa Public School Superintendent Dr. Means to discuss the importance of protecting Title I funding amid the President's threats to dismantle the Department of Education. I will always work to strengthen public education!
