People always ask how a second-generation firefighter ended up a Democrat. The truth is, I grew up in a Reagan-Republican household. I’m a Democrat because, as a labor leader, I saw firsthand that Democrats were the ones trying to protect my firefighters and working-class families just like them.

I’ve seen both sides of the aisle, John. Over the past several decades, Democrats have led the way in prioritizing working families, investing in good union jobs, and championing a living wage. The Trump administration wants to see all that progress erased.

Outlined in Project 2025 are plans to allow states to outlaw labor unions, eliminate labor protections, and ignore the national minimum wage. Trump may have distanced himself from it on the campaign trail, but it’s clear now he’ll follow it through.
