Email from ENA 6 babies died of hypothermia in Gaza this winter. Dozens of members of Congress couldn’t care less… John,  We’re sorry to have to share this distressing news but the situation in Gaza is dire. Over six babies died in Gaza this winter as a result of low temperatures and hypothermia. Far-right Israel supporters are denying this basic reality or, even worse, openly celebrating these deaths of infants and newborns. Al Jazeera and other news agencies have reported that these deaths include two twin babies and resulted from “bitter cold and frost” hitting “dilapidated tents.” These are the same tents that Gazan civilians are being forced to live in after almost all of Gaza’s residents—2.3 million people—have been displaced from their homes by Israel’s army. But despite this astounding reality, propagandists for Israel’s far-right government are telling their followers that these tragic deaths didn’t even happen — and House Democrats seem to believe them. One of the propagandists, Eyal Yakoby, posted Gaza’s forecast and implied that the babies’ deaths couldn’t have happened because of the weather. He ignored the fact that hundreds of thousands of Gazans are sheltering in makeshift tents right off the windy Mediterranean coast in the height of winter with very little food, water or power. But while genocidal propagandists spread their lies we know the truth, and the truth is that these infants died as a direct result of the brutal Israeli war on civilians that has been funded by our government—the government of the United States. The unfortunate truth also is that these civilian deaths are supported by the majority of the US Congress, including the House Progressive Caucus, supposedly the left-most faction of House Democrats. 55 of them voted to send US weapons to Israel even after tens of thousands of civilians had been killed in the recent war. We need leaders who actually understand that letting children and babies die of hypothermia is wrong and who use their power to stop atrocities like these. We’re ready to fund primary challenges against “progressives” who use their positions to support Israel’s crimes, but we can’t do it alone.
