Dear John,
This year has brought all kinds of anguish to our hearts and our souls, even though the events have taken place far from where most of us live. The horror and tragedy of the Bibas family and Oded Lifshitz is a renewed blow. It reminds us yet again of the savagery of our enemies and the deep love we have for Israel and our brothers and sisters.
In his famous homily of comfort, the prophet Isaiah begins, “Be comforted, be comforted my people (40:1).” We seek two kinds of comfort — from above us and from about us. Confronting pain, we do not lose faith and we do not lose one another. At each Shabbat table and service we will speak words of memory, of sadness but also of hope; “speak tenderly to Jerusalem” continues the prophet. We are angry but not despairing.
We send our deepest condolences to the Bibas and Lifshitz families, and to all those who have suffered unimaginable loss. The forensic confirmation of the murders of little Kfir and Ariel Bibas is a tragedy beyond words, and the uncertainty surrounding the fate of their mother, Shiri, only deepens our collective pain and outrage. As we mourn alongside them, we remain steadfast in our commitment to stand with them, in prayer and in love, throughout the night and beyond.
Sincerely,
Rabbi David Wolpe
