These days, it feels like the Republican Party should adopt a new motto: ”Rules for thee, but not for me.”

Let us explain: Before Brittany Pettersen welcomed her second child in January, she introduced a bipartisan resolution to allow new parents in Congress to vote by proxy. Under this resolution, young parents like Brittany would be able to represent their constituents and care for their newborn children at the same time.

Unfortunately, Speaker Mike Johnson spoke out against Brittany’s resolution. He said that while he has sympathy for “women legislators who are of birthing age,” it “doesn’t fit with the language of the Constitution.”

Well, if Johnson truly believes that proxy voting is unconstitutional, maybe he should have told that to Republican Congressman Byron Donalds, who voted by proxy earlier this month, just because he was on a TV show in California.

And don’t forget: Speaker Johnson himself has even voted by proxy 39 times throughout his career!

This hypocrisy is particularly disappointing. While new parents in Congress like Brittany are forced to choose between caring for their newborns and casting a vote, Republicans aren’t even following their own made-up rules.

But make no mistake: This isn’t going to stop Brittany’s work to level the playing field for regular families and young women like herself — which is exactly why she’s counting on your support.

If you believe regular families and young women deserve an unrelenting advocate for their needs in Congress, will you chip in to help Brittany keep up the fight? We can’t allow the GOP’s anti-family agenda to become the law of the land.
