Today is the birthday of civil rights hero Rep. John Lewis, John.

Throughout his incredible life, Rep. Lewis was a tireless advocate for racial justice and voting rights. He was an original member of the Freedom Riders, where he was arrested – and even beaten – for standing against segregation. And he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Alabama to defend voting rights. 

While voting rights expanded significantly during Rep. Lewis' lifetime, he was dismayed that many states still had laws on the books that discriminated against African-American voters.

The right to vote is fundamental, John. It is a pillar of our democracy and the key way Americans can express their opinions on the issues that matter most to them. 

We must do everything we can to protect the freedom to vote. 

To honor John Lewis’ birthday, will you sign our petition calling on Congress to finally pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act?
