Dear Friends,

Last night, we hosted more than 100 residents at Winchester Hall for a celebration of Black History Month in Frederick County. And unlike what we are seeing from some of our federal agencies, Black History Month is NOT cancelled here in Frederick County!

In times like these, it is more important than ever to remain grounded in our vision for Frederick County– that we strive to be a vibrant and unique community where all people can live, work, and thrive while enjoying a strong sense of place and belonging.

The 2025 Black History Theme is African Americans and Labor, and our celebration highlighted the way this theme intersects with the collective experiences of Black people in Frederick County.

We heard from Rhonda Tessier of Friends of Catoctin Furnace, Council Vice-President Kavonté

Duckett, members of the Frederick Youth Council, and Sonja Brown Jenkins with AARCH about labor in our past, present, and future. We also enjoyed incredible performances by the Frederick Mass Choir, the Walkersville High Steppers, and dancers from LEAD Dance Academy.

I want to thank our employee resource group Black Leaders in Action Creating Change (BLACC) who worked with my office to organize this meaningful event.

Black history is our history, and the experiences of Black people are woven deeply into the fabric of the American experience. It was an honor to join with so many community members last night to celebrate this history and lift up the voices and experiences of Black Frederick County residents.

Sincerely,
