Yes, Churches are Essential

Yes, Churches are Essential

Are houses of worship an “essential” part of American life? President Trump believes they are, and I couldn’t agree more.

Friday’s announcement from the White House that the Centers for Disease Control will be changing the COVID-19-inspired classification from “nonessential” to “essential” is long overdue. The president will also be calling on governors to allow churches, synagogues and mosques to open “right now.”

Thank you, Mr. President.

I’m not suggesting every church should swing open wide their doors, but as the rest of the country transitions back to a semblance of normalcy, they should have the right to make that determination for themselves.

Four officers from the Minneapolis Police Department have been fired after conducting an arrest which lead to the death of unarmed black man George Floyd.

On Monday evening, two officers from the Minneapolis Police Department responded to a call about a “forgery in progress.” According to subsequent police reports, Floyd allegedly resisted arrest.

In the video, after officers took him to the ground, a white police officer can be seen kneeling on the neck of George Floyd. Floyd’s head is pushed into the asphalt, his nose begins bleeding and he can be heard pleading with the officer to allow him to breath. “Please. Please. Please I can’t breathe,” Floyd moaned.

Three officers, two of which had arrived on scene after the arrest began, held Floyd down as a fourth told surrounding bystanders to stay back. “I cannot breathe. I cannot breathe,” Floyd repeatedly said during the incident.

Former CBS News President Calls Mainstream Media to Come Clean on Their Liberal Bias
Former CBS News President Calls Mainstream Media to Come Clean on Their Liberal Bias

Van Gordon Sauter, the president of CBS News in the 1980s, has an opinion piece in this weekend’s Wall Street Journal that’s getting a great deal of attention and that’s very good news. He’s calling his own to professional accountability. It is not that they should stop being so thoroughly leftist in their reporting. He believes it is far too late for such a change. Their liberalism has soaked down into the marrow of their bones. It’s who they are. He readily recognizes how badly it has gotten, “The news media is catching up with the liberalism of the professoriate, the entertainment industry, upscale magazines and the literary world.”

And it is likely to get even worse. Sauter asks his readers to consider, “If Mr. Trump prevails in November, what’s the next act, if any, for journalists and the resistance?” He is precisely right to ask, “how will a large segment of the public ever put stock in journalism it considers hostile to the country’s best interests?” It’s likely that they cannot and will not.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., 20 other Republican members of Congress and four constituents filed a lawsuit against Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., asking a federal court to stop voting by proxy when the House of Representatives reconvenes May 28.

The House passed Resolution 965 on May 15, allowing the Speaker to designate a “covered period” of 45 days during which members may designate another member to vote for them, when a “public health emergency due to a novel coronavirus is in effect.” The Speaker also has the authority to “extend the covered period for an additional 45 days.”

Oregon Churches Facing Fines, Jail Time if They Worship Indoors, But OK for Gyms, Restaurants, Malls to Open
Oregon Churches Facing Fines, Jail Time if They Worship Indoors, But OK for Gyms, Restaurants, Malls to Open

Two Oregon churches have filed a federal lawsuit against Governor Katherine Brown for her unconstitutional closure order banning indoor worship services of more than 25 people.

Edgewater Christian Fellowship and Roseburg Church of God of Prophecy and their pastors are located in counties that have experienced only 25 cases of COVID-19 each. They have been observing closure laws since March but want to re-open for worship services on May 31, which is known as Pentecost Sunday on the Christian calendar.

However, an Executive Order (EO) from Governor Brown forbids gatherings of more than 25 people. The EO even singles out “faith-based” gatherings.
