![]() Here in Kansas, we recognize that providing life-saving health care shouldn’t be a partisan issue. That’s why a majority of Kansas Democrats and Republicans alike support Medicaid. Today, over 400,000 Kansans are enrolled in KanCare, the program through which Kansas administers Medicaid. It covers 3 in 10 Kansas children, over 30 percent of births, and over half of Kansas’ nursing home residents. Since its introduction in 1965, Medicaid has granted millions of American families the freedom to access health care without the fear of debt. But despite its overwhelming success and deep bipartisan support, Republicans in Congress just voted to cut $880 billion from this life-saving program.
If National Republicans get their way and gut Medicaid, it would force a countless number of families to face an impossible choice: Keep your life-saving care by going into debt — or forgo health care as a whole. Let’s be clear: Kansas families should never have to make that choice. Instead of taking action to lower the cost of health care — an issue that unites Kansans regardless of political party — extremists in Washington are hell-bent on raising the cost of health care and playing politics with peoples’ lives. Make no mistake: Sharice will do everything in her power to push back against this plan and protect Kansans’ care. But for now, we need to show Congress that there’s a groundswell of grassroots support behind Sharice’s work to defend Medicaid.
