Among many lies Trump has told about immigrants, he claims that immigration contributes to the lack of affordable housing across America. Our new joint publication with the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), “Targeting Immigrants Will Not Solve the Affordable Housing Crisis” highlights the true key causes of high housing costs, the critical role immigrants play in solving America’s housing crisis, and the ways Trump’s immigration policies will lead to even more housing insecurity and homelessness.  The fact sheet can be found on the NLIHC website and via the link below. The Trump Administration is expected to terminate at least half of all HUD employees, making it harder for states and communities to address homelessness and housing crises. The National Low Income Housing Coalition is leading  a national sign-on letter for organizations to tell Congress why HUD resources are critical to low-income families and communities and urge representatives to protect HUD programs and staff. A new Trump executive order issued last week claimed to ban immigrants from accessing public benefits. This order does not change eligibility for federally funded public benefits programs, and does not change how any federally funded programs are currently administered. It is another effort by the Trump administration to scare immigrant families out of accessing the services they are rightfully eligible to receive. A new short video posted on our social media shares this update and reassures families that they can and should still access the resources they need. The video can be accessed via the links below and will be available in Spanish and Chinese on our social media soon. Please share widely with your networks, and follow our social media for additional rapid response videos if policy changes in the future.

The current political climate is leaving even more immigrant families with uncertainty about their ability to access benefits like Medicaid, SNAP, and others. That’s why Protecting Immigrant Families (PIF), Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC),  and Share Our Strength/No Kid Hungry are launching The Herlinda Project—a new initiative designed to help immigration attorneys and others understand the basics of safety net programs. Join us Thursday, March 6, 2:00PM EST for The Herlinda Project Webinar: Tools to Combat Public Charge-Related Misinformation in Immigrant Communities. During this webinar, we’ll go over the current state of public charge policy under the second Trump Administration, share how state advocates can also play a crucial role by using tools like KeepYourBenefits.org, explain how you can use these resources to empower immigrant communities with accurate, accessible information.

The Dream and Promise Act will be reintroduced in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, February 26th. The legislation would create a pathway to citizenship for certain DACA recipients, immigrant youth, and some individuals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), potentially protecting over 5 million people.
