John,
A few days ago, you may have noticed Twitter added a link to fact-check President Trump’s most recent, false rant against allowing Americans to safely vote during a pandemic.
At that point, Trump had two choices. If he didn’t like people pointing out his falsehoods, he could tell the truth. Or he could throw a temper tantrum and issue a legally flawed or unconstitutional executive order.
Guess which one he chose?
Yesterday, Trump issued an executive order that purported to change the rules for social media companies like Twitter, an attempt to intimidate them out of doing something about misinformation on their platforms, especially when it’s spread by him.
Whatever you might think of social media companies, and I’ve been plenty critical myself, that is not how laws are made.
And if it wasn’t already obvious that this was a transparently political move, the fact that the “Executive Order” lashes out at me directly removes all doubt. Early leaked versions of the order didn’t have this language, but it was added later. I wonder who could have done that?
See for yourself:

This rather pathetic attempt to rewrite the history of his Russia and Ukraine misconduct would be funny if the consequences for our democracy weren’t so serious. It’s yet another effort to distract and misinform the American people from his many failures responding to coronavirus, while attacking anyone who criticizes or holds him accountable. It’s the move of a tin pot dictator, and we must not tolerate it.
Thankfully, we have less than six months left until Election Day, our chance to hold our Democratic House Majority, flip the Senate, and remove Trump from the White House once and for all.
This Sunday is our campaign’s end-of-month fundraising deadline. As we end the month of May and move closer to the general election, will you pitch in $10 or whatever you’re able right now to support our campaign as Trump continues to attack me?
