A Message from Congresswoman Sherrill
Dear Friends,
Last night, House Republicans passed a budget that dismantles Medicaid, cuts food assistance for vulnerable communities, and strips funding from public schools while giving tax handouts to billionaires like Elon Musk and adding $3.3 trillion to our deficit.
I voted NO. And I want to tell you why:
This budget is not about responsible spending, government efficiency, or lowering costs for families — in fact, it does the exact opposite.
Washington Republicans may tell you they are not cutting Medicaid — but don’t be fooled. They are cutting $880 billion from Medicaid. And let me be clear about what that actually means: there are nearly two million New Jerseyans who rely on Medicaid for health care coverage, and nearly 800,000 children that rely on Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
With these cuts, New Jerseyans won’t be able to go to the doctor when they are sick, hospitals will close their doors, seniors will lose nursing home care, and Community Health Centers will no longer be able to serve our most vulnerable communities.
As if that wasn’t enough, despite the rising cost of groceries, House Republicans are trying to take away critical food assistance that helps put dinner on the table for nearly 1 out of every 10 New Jersey residents. And, as we work to ensure that every New Jersey student regardless of ZIP code can get a quality education, House Republicans want to strip resources from our public school system.
These are New Jersey’s hard-earned tax dollars — they must be invested to help lower costs in our communities. That is why I will continue to fight tooth-and-nail to pass legislation that lowers costs, supports families, and reflects our commitment to serving the American people.
