A retired teacher who just moved 45 minutes outside of town who really only likes coming into town once every two weeks for groceries.
A thirty year old nurse who prefers road trip vacations so he never felt the need to get a passport. And his birth certificate is at her mom’s house three states away.
These are all people who you might know. You might even see a little bit of yourself in them! These are also all people who could be threatened by the SAVE Act if Republicans in the House get their way.
SEND AN EMAILIn case you missed it, the SAVE Act would require you to show up in person with your passport or birth certificate to register to vote or change your registration—documents that 21 million Americans don’t have readily available—or at all.
The newly married woman? She just changed her name, and hasn’t updated all of her legal paperwork yet. Should she not be able to vote?
The retired teacher? Driving 45 minutes into town to the nearest government office to reregister is a huge barrier, and isn’t something they can do easily. Should they not be able to vote?
The nurse? Just because he doesn’t have a passport and can’t drive eight hours to get his birth certificate doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be allowed to vote if he needs to re-register.
Don’t be fooled by what Republicans in Washington are saying about the SAVE Act.
They claim it will prevent non-citizens from voting, but that’s already illegal. The truth is that this bill is nothing more than an attempt to trick the American public into making it harder for millions of citizens to vote. It’s up to us to fill our legislators' voicemails and inboxes, telling them we do not support this legislation and demanding they do not vote for it.
Don’t let the House vote on this legislation without Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton hearing from you. Send them an email now and tell them to vote NO on the SAVE Act.
Thanks for all that you do,
