TRENTON, NJ : Leroy J. Jones Jr., Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, released the following statement on the Republicans voting to gut Medicaid:
“Last night, House Republicans showed their true colors once again – leaving New Jersey working families in the dust while they made sure that the billionaire backers like Elon Musk who helped put them in office are going to get the tax breaks they paid for. House Republicans voted to move forward with their disastrous, Trump endorsed reconciliation bill that will rip away essential health care for those that need it most and make lives harder for the constituents they were elected to protect.
Like NJ Democratic Representatives Frank Pallone, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and LeMonica McIver have been saying for days, if just three House Republicans grew a spine, they could put a stop to this corruption. And amazingly, in New Jersey, we HAVE three Republican Representatives and they ALL voted to gut Medicaid alongside their craven colleagues.
According to Time Magazine, Rep. Jeff Van Drew stated that “he called President Donald Trump on Monday evening to express his opposition to the budget resolution: ‘I told him I very well may not vote for this, and I’m certainly waiting until the last minute to see if some changes can be made, because I’m very unhappy.’”
But just one day later, he and Reps. Chris Smith and Tom Kean, Jr. all voted to gut Medicaid and set our economy back decades. Their constituents should know exactly who is responsible for putting them in this position, and that is President Trump, Jeff Van Drew, Chris Smith, and Tom Kean, Jr.
I believe that Reps. Van Drew, Smith, and Kean, Jr. owe the people who elected them an explanation and I am calling on them to hold in person Town Halls as quickly as possible so that they may face their constituents to explain how ripping away the very thing some of their constituents need to survive is somehow good policy. The notion of partisanship over duty has passed; these Congressmen owe the people of their districts an explanation.”
