Addressing Agency Terminations and Furloughs in Central Washington

With news of federal employee terminations and furloughs directly impacting families in Central Washington, I have heard from residents of the Fourth District this week about the concerns they have with these actions.

A strong, well trained federal workforce is essential, and I have communicated to the Trump Administration that there should be a more nuanced approach to terminations and furloughs.

I have concerns that the unintended consequences of these workforce reductions will have long-lasting implications at Hanford, PNNL, BPA, and other critical sites. While I agree that the federal workforce and related spending needs to be reduced, we must ensure that positions critical to public safety, energy, and research should be maintained.

Talking Farm Workforce Challenges in Yakima

On Tuesday, I met with members of Washington State Tree Fruit Association and Northwest Horticulture to discuss developments at USDA and workforce challenges.

We also emphasized the importance strong trade programs and ways to increase market access for Washington farmers.

I understand firsthand the challenges Central Washington farmers are facing, and I am actively working with my colleagues in Congress to meet the agriculture industry's needs.

On Wednesday, I had a chance to hear firsthand from leaders of hospitals in our region about the issues they are seeing and the need for expanding the health workforce in Central Washington.
It is no secret that rural healthcare access is a challenge in our area. We will continue to work together to improve healthcare access and quality for our communities that desperately need it.

Celebrating the Next Generation of the Agriculture Industry

Happy National FFA Week! As a farmer and former FFA member, I know firsthand how vital this program is for youth not only in Central Washington, but across the country. I am a proud co-sponsor the legislation designating this week the official National FFA Week!

Our nation’s future ability to put food on the table and support agriculture trade largely depends on our youth being engaged with the issues now. FFA is an incredible program that instills in our nation’s youth the importance of agriculture and helps pave the way for the next generation of the agriculture industry!
