McMahon’s professional experience in education and education policy is practically nonexistent. Outside of a single semester as a student-teacher in college, McMahon has no teaching experience in K-12 schools or universities. The Washington Post reported she falsely claimed to hold a bachelor’s degree in education on a questionnaire for the Connecticut Board of Education, where she served a brief, one-year stint. McMahon embraces the anti-student inclusion extremist group Moms for Liberty, which promotes censorship of LGBTQ+ topics, book bans, and advocates for the abolishment of the Department of Education. When asked whether teaching Black history courses remains lawful or if schools offering them would continue receiving federal funding, Ms. McMahon refused to confirm they could continue teaching those courses without losing funding. The Department of Education is responsible for enforcing federal civil rights laws through the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), oversees critical funding that serves over 50 million students and sets standards for programs like after-school services, education for students with disabilities, and more. In 2024, 37% of all complaints received by OCR involved disability discrimination and 19% related to race, color, or national origin. McMahon has made it clear she plans to dismantle these essential protections, which would have a devastating impact on students. McMahon’s confirmation would undermine the Department of Education’s mission and jeopardize the future of millions of students. Friend, your senators will soon vote to confirm or deny McMahon.
