A Message from Gabe:

Greetings Rhode Islanders,

If budgets reflect our values, the proposal from conservatives makes clear where their priorities are — tax giveaways for the wealthy at the expense of hardworking families.

As a new member of the House Committee on the Budget, I was on the frontlines to push back against the Republican budget blueprint. Their plan opens the door for massive cuts to federal programs that help feed children, keep our seniors healthy, and improve health access for Rhode Islanders. This could deliver over $4.5 Trillion in tax breaks primarily for the wealthy and large corporations.

How This Budget Could Hurt Rhode Islanders:

Make no mistake—this is not a responsible budget. It’s reckless.

Instead of placing additional burdens on families already struggling to afford food and health care, we should be investing in policies that lower costs, create good-paying jobs, and strengthen Social Security and Medicare for future generations.

Last week, I also led over 150 of my colleagues in opposing President Trump’s decision to dramatically cut National Institutes of Health funding for critical research. The decision to cap indirect research cost reimbursements would devastate scientific research and lead to lab closures, suspension of critical clinical trials, stifle innovation, and deny Americans access to lifesaving and life-extending treatments.

I will continue to stand against dangerous cuts that would harm children, seniors, and adults with disabilities in Rhode Island.

Sincerely,

Member of Congress

Do you believe President Trump is doing enough to lower costs for Rhode Islanders?

Image As President Trump is enacting policies that would cut critical research funding for the National Institutes of Health that finds cures and saves lives, I spoke with Dean Ashish K. Jha at Brown University about standing up for scientists and medical researchers.

I will continue working in Congress to restore these funds and end the brazen attempt to stifle innovation and public health.

Image Alongside Ranking Members Representative Zoe Lofgren (CA-18) and Representative Haley Stevens (MI-11), I am calling on the U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick to protect employees who carry out key national security and public safety roles.

Ceding authority to Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency or DOGE only disrupts critical functions and harms our ability to track storms and keep Americans safe from extreme weather.

It is essential our nation remains committed to supporting our allies abroad.

I am proud to join Senator Sheldon Whitehouse in reintroducing legislation to give a Congressional Gold Medal in overdue recognition to these brave individuals.

Image This week, I met with the Rhode Island chapter of the Alzheimer's Association to discuss my efforts in Congress to oppose President Trump's proposed drastic cuts to funding for the National Institutes of Health. These cuts would impact Alzheimer’s research and limit support for Rhode Islanders affected by Alzheimer's, including patients, their families, and those dedicated to finding remedies.

Image At my annual discussion with the New England Council, I spoke about my work in Congress to protect critical programs from cuts that would harm the American people.

After the program, I sat down with young professionals to discuss why it has never been more important to get involved and stay engaged.

Image Because National Labor Review Board (NLRB) Member Gwynne Wilcox was unconstitutionally fired by President Trump, workers across the country face delays in getting relief if they are exploited at work.

264 of my colleagues — on both sides of the aisle — agree: we need to reinstate Gwynne Wilcox to the NLRB.

On Presidents’ Day, ‘we the people’ must remember this foundational lesson and the legacies our presidents have left behind as we continue the pursuit of a more perfect nation.

Amo Calls Out Harmful GOP Budget Priorities, Advocates for Federal Programs that Support Rhode Island Seniors

ImageCongressman Amo addresses the crowd at Barrington Peck Center.

This week, I visited Barrington Peck Center for Adult Enrichment to speak with residents about how proposed cuts to Medicare and Medicaid would hurt seniors, families, and people with disabilities.

The House Republican budget resolution, which passed the Budget Committee on February 13, 2025, could cut at least $880 billion to Medicaid – threatening the 80 million Americans who rely on this critical program for access to health care.

ImageCongressman Amo visits East Bay Community Action Program Dental Center that delivers services to Rhode Islanders on Aquidneck Island.

I also toured the East Bay Community Action Program Dental Center, where healthcare providers raised concerns about how these cuts could limit services for patients across the state. Medicare and Medicaid help more than 200,000 Rhode Islanders—cuts like these could have devastating consequences.

I will continue to sound the alarm about what the conservative rip-off seeks to do for children, seniors, and adults with disabilities in the Ocean State.
