Donald Trump has made it clear, he is stacking any law enforcement he has jurisdiction over with loyalists who will help him rewrite the history of January 6.
His latest move? Nominating Ed Martin as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, the most powerful federal prosecutor in the city where the attack took place.
This is the same Ed Martin who stood with “Stop the Steal” conspiracy theorists. The same Ed Martin who represented Proud Boys and other Capitol rioters in court. The same Ed Martin who, as interim U.S. Attorney, has already fired 30 federal prosecutors working on January 6 cases and dropped charges against hundreds of insurrectionists.
Here’s the thing, this is one nomination we might be able to stop.
Every Republican Senator who said they didn’t support pardoning the worst offenders of January 6 can now prove it. They cannot say they oppose freeing the most violent of the convicted Jan. 6 extremists while confirming the man who implemented the pardons.
Tell the Senate to reject Ed Martin as US attorney for the District of Columbia now.
Ed Martin has not only defended January 6 insurrectionists but actively worked to undermine federal prosecutions against them. He even pushed to reverse a judge’s ruling that banned convicted rioters from returning to the Capitol.
The conflict of interest is staggering. Martin represented at least three Capitol riot defendants, then once appointed by Trump to acting director signed off on dismissing cases against them.
It’s likely illegal, but it is definitely unethical, and a clear sign that his loyalty lies not with the rule of law, but with Trump’s criminal allies.
This is a test for every Senator who claims to support law and order. Either they oppose violent insurrectionists, or they don’t.
January 6 activist Ed Martin must not serve as US attorney for the District of Columbia. Demand the Senate vote no now.
