John,
While most Democrats in Congress are posting and talking a big game against Elon Musk’s government takeover and access to millions of Americans’ sensitive, private data, many have taken money from his company.
At least 77 Democratic congressional campaign committees took more than half a million dollars from SpaceX’s PAC last election cycle. That includes a $30,000 donation to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and $15,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), the two main fundraising arms of the Party.
Many of the Democrats who took SpaceX PAC money sit on committees that oversee government contracts with SpaceX. How can they hold this unelected billionaire accountable for his corporate coup when they receive financial support from his company?
As our communications director Usamah Andrabi told The Intercept, either Democrats can continue to enable it alongside Republicans, or they can tackle it head-on, reject all corporate PACs as a party policy, and restore the trust and credibility that they have spent decades losing with working-class voters.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
