** Seeking community voices for response to homelessness
------------------------------------------------------------

Are you interested in helping to shape and guide Anchorage’s approach to homelessness? Consider joining the Anchorage Homeless Prevention and Response System Advisory Council ([link removed]) . The group is seeking new councilors to serve in leadership, as well as general members.

Individuals with lived expertise in homelessness are encouraged to apply as well as community members who would like an active role. People who work for or otherwise support organizations that serve those who are unhoused also are encouraged to take part.

** Connecting with and counting unhoused neighbors
------------------------------------------------------------

The annual Point-in-Time Count of those experiencing homelessness in Anchorage took place Jan. 28-30, asking our unhoused neighbors where they spent the night on Jan. 27.

Teams walked wooded trails and crossed frozen creeks to check camps, returning if no one was home the first time. They went to convenience stores and bus stations, hospital emergency rooms and parking lots where people gather. And they brought welcome goods: Ziplocs with hats and gloves, socks and handwarmers, protein shakes and other food items.

** Bringing in the voices of those who know the system best
------------------------------------------------------------

We gathered recently with staff, partners and neighbors with recent lived expertise in homelessness to learn how to better incorporate those voices into our work. The workshop held at Catholic Social Services’ 3rd Avenue Resource and Navigation Center used deep listening, rapport building and brainstorming to build a framework for action and improvements to Anchorage’s homelessness response.

Learn more about the project and recommended next steps here ([link removed]) .

The project was made possible through the Alaska Humanities Forum Strengthening Communities Dialogue Grant.

** What is the current state of homelessness in Anchorage?
------------------------------------------------------------

At the end of December, some 3,070 people in Anchorage were literally homeless. While most were staying in shelters, an estimated 475 were sleeping outdoors, in vehicles or in other places not fit for people to live. That number has been edging up for three main reasons:
* People in our community have gotten back in touch with the system, seeking help after a period of inactivity.
* Fewer people are making the transition to housing.
* A high number of people are newly experiencing homelessness.

** OP-ED
------------------------------------------------------------

** Housing isn’t political. It’s survival.
------------------------------------------------------------

The consequences of housing insecurity ripple through every aspect of our communities. Without stable housing, people cannot effectively seek employment, care for their children, or address mental and physical health challenges.

We need to reframe the conversation. We must address homelessness and ensure access to affordable housing.
