John,

Every good teacher knows that in each moment, there is an opportunity for a lesson. With the administration increasing their attacks on public education, consider this class in session.

In a moment, I am going to share more about our work to protect the Department of Education. But first, my February end-of-month deadline is this Friday, and having your support would mean the world.

Will you donate $10 to help me communicate our message across the 5th District and support the Department of Education from these attacks? We must stand united.

Right now, Donald Trump and his administration are actively taking steps to dismantle the department. Just take a look at this headline from the Hartford Courant:

CT leaders, teachers sound alarm on $321M in federal cuts to education, more to come
— February 2025

FIGHT BACK

Why should we care if the Department of Education is dismantled, you might ask?

The answer is that the Department of Education does a lot. It supports the public education of approximately 49 million students across this country by establishing policies to prevent discrimination, supporting special education programs, administering Pell Grant and financial aid programs, overseeing apprenticeship programs, and so much more.

Bottom line, this isn’t just a building in Washington D.C. It is YOUR neighborhood schools. YOUR neighborhood teachers. YOUR local community colleges. YOUR children and the programs they receive at school.

And all of this is under attack by the president, who is seeking to unilaterally eliminate the Department of Education.

But here are the facts: In 1979, Congress passed the Department of Education Organization Act, which officially established the Department of Education. What that means is that because the Department of Education was created by an act of Congress, it can only be dissolved by an act of Congress.

House Democrats will fight back against any unconstitutional effort to dismantle the Department of Education. I will continue to raise my voice against these attacks on public education and work to get our teachers and staff the resources they deserve.

Donate $10 to help me communicate with my constituents and defend the Department of Education from attacks. Every donation matters.
