CLEAN ENERGY INSIDER
FEBRUARY 25, 2025
REAMS REPORT
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Each year, CRES Forum proudly sponsors the Sustainable Energy in America Factbook ([link removed]) , produced by the Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) and BloombergNEF. The 2025 edition, released last week, reinforces what we’ve long advocated: An all-of-the-above energy strategy is the most effective way to meet rising electricity demand, strengthen the economy and reduce global emissions.
BCSE President Lisa Jacobson and I recently co-authored an op-ed ([link removed]) highlighting key findings from this year’s Factbook. With artificial intelligence and data center demand surging, companies like Microsoft, Google and Amazon signed a record-breaking 183 clean energy deals in 2024—nearly doubling the previous year’s power purchase agreements. These commitments totaled 28 gigawatts (GW), a 26 percent increase from 2022.
The U.S. clean energy sector is ready to meet this demand. Solar and energy storage hit new highs in 2024, pushing renewable energy to 24 percent of total U.S. power generation. Meanwhile, natural gas remained the nation’s largest electricity source, supplying nearly 43 percent of total generation in 2024. Together, natural gas and renewables generated 67 percent of America’s electricity—demonstrating the strength of a diversified energy mix.
To sharpen our competitive edge in this era of energy expansion, continued federal support is critical. Businesses and investors need policy certainty to drive long-term investments. Existing tax credits for technologies like carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, nuclear, solar, wind and more must be maintained to unlock private capital.
At the same time, energy projects must come online faster to keep pace with growing demand. Lengthy permitting processes delay grid connections and hinder our progress. Federal permitting reforms are essential to accelerating deployment and ensuring the U.S. leads in energy innovation.
CRES remains committed to advancing these priorities in Congress and welcomes partners who share our vision for a stronger, all-of-the-above energy future.
Sincerely,
Heather Reams
CRES President
WHAT CRES IS HEARING
"I don't think we should be playing politics here. We don't want to flip around and do what they've [Biden] done to this industry or that industry and pick winners and losers. You apply the law universally, and you allow people to develop the resources that they have.” – Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt on clawing back funds from the Inflation Reduction Act and bipartisan infrastructure law during a Q&A ([link removed]) .
––
“While we continue working to unleash American energy, we cannot turn a blind eye to the benefits these clean energy tax credits provide and how they are actively helping our Armed Forces, small businesses and American families. The bottom line is that in order to increase American energy dominance and bolster our domestic energy security, we need to protect as much production and innovation as possible. [...] We must put America first by prioritizing domestic energy production and protecting our existing clean energy tax credits.” – Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee Chairman Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) during a hearing ([link removed]) on improving the federal environmental review and permitting processes.
––
"Senate Republicans are taking action to reverse these harmful regulations using the Congressional Review Act to cut through the red tape that's fueling inflation and burdening American energy.” – Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) in a statement ([link removed]) .
WHAT CRES IS SAYING
Administrator Zeldin’s approval of West Virginia’s Class VI well authority...
“I am pleased to see Administrator Zeldin’s approval of West Virginia’s Class VI well authority. West Virginia has long been an American energy powerhouse, and this decision will empower the state to efficiently permit and accelerate the deployment of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) projects. CCUS is a vital component of an all-of-the-above energy strategy and will help ensure American energy technologies remain competitive while reducing emissions. This decision underscores the importance of state-led innovation in achieving these goals.” – CRES President Heather Reams in a statement ([link removed]) .

Thompson Leads on Sealing Orphaned Wells ([link removed])
America’s oil and gas industry has a long history of driving economic growth and supporting energy development. However, one lasting challenge is the legacy of orphaned wells—abandoned oil and gas wells that were either never properly plugged or have deteriorated over time.
