** Stop Starmer’s Killer Cuts in Aid
------------------------------------------------------------

Dear John

Yesterday British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that he will reduce UK aid from 0.5% of Gross National Income (GNI) to 0.3%. That could amount to a £6bn cut in the aid budget, on top of cuts already imposed by the previous government.

The UK has already savagely cut aid to Burma, despite a huge humanitarian crisis created by the Burmese military since the 2021 coup.

Aid cuts from 0.7% of the UK’s Gross National Income (GNI) to 0.5% by the former Conservative government contributed to a 73% cut in aid to Burma and to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh in recent years.

Starmer’s announcement could mean more devastating cuts in UK aid to Burma, at a time when more than 4 million people have been forced to flee Burmese military attacks. They come on top of cuts in US aid which are already killing people. The UK should be stepping up and providing more assistance, not stepping back.

Email Prime Minister Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves now, telling them to increase, not cut, UK aid. ([link removed])

As soon as the news was announced, Burma Campaign UK condemned the decision, and I went on Sky News to talk about the cuts.

The cuts are being justified by saying they are needed for defence. It is a sad irony that cuts in international aid to fund increasing defence spending will create space for and embolden the same regimes that threaten our security.

The Burmese military have already been gloating about the cuts in US aid. Now Keir Starmer has given the Burmese military something else to celebrate. UK aid in Burma saves lives. Less aid means more deaths.

Email Prime Minister Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves now. ([link removed])
