Kay is a force to be reckoned with. A Black, queer, gifted student who refuses to let the world define her, Kay embodies the kind of brilliance and resilience that we strive to uplift every day at It Gets Better.
She’s not waiting for permission to take up space. She’s pushing for legislative change in the foster care system, advocating for inclusivity in education, and making sure Black voices aren’t just included—they’re centered. As an It Gets Better Youth Voices ambassador, she’s finding her own power and helping others do the same.

This Black History Month, we’re amplifying the voices of young people like Kay—because they aren’t just the future. They’re the now.
Here’s just a part of Kay's story, in her own words:
"For most of my life, I have been questioned by others if I am fully Black. I’d hear comments and questions wondering where I get my ‘spice’ (assuming I’m Hispanic) or my ‘Asian’ eyes or how I’m able to speak so eloquently (assuming I’m mixed with a white parent who could guide me). That never made loving my Blackness harder, but it definitely confused me. How come it wasn’t okay to be just Black?"
This month—and every month—we’re committed to creating a world where Black queer youth like Kay are heard, celebrated, and empowered. We need move voices like Kay's, and we need more people who believe in making space for them.
