"Can I go to a Planned Parenthood health center if I'm undocumented?" |
Planned Parenthood health centers welcome everyone, no matter what their immigration status is. If you are or know an undocumented person who plans to visit a Planned Parenthood health center, here are a few things to keep in mind. |
-
You don’t have to tell anyone your immigration status. If you're undocumented or don't have a Social Security number, don’t worry. Health center staff don’t need and won’t ask for that information to give you the care you need.
-
If you can't get health insurance, there are other options. Ask health center staff about other ways to pay for your care.
-
You may need to bring some form of ID with you. Many Planned Parenthood health centers require a form of ID to enter the building. Each health center has its own rules. Contact your local Planned Parenthood health center to find out what you need to bring with you.
-
Some payment options require a photo ID. If you plan to pay by credit card, debit card, check, or third-party health insurance, you’ll need a form of ID with a picture of yourself on it. Other payment options include cash, money order, or payments made by another person who has a photo ID.
- Confidentiality is the law. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) protects the confidentiality of your data and ensures the privacy of your health records and information.
-
You have rights. If U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents enter a Planned Parenthood health center, the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution limits how they enforce immigration laws: You have the right to remain silent and contact a lawyer. You don’t have to answer any of their questions.
