John,
A horrifying new piece of proposed state legislation just dropped: Montana’s House Bill 609 would charge pregnant patients with “trafficking” their own fetus across state lines.
In November, Montana voters made their pro-choice views clear, passing a ballot measure enshrining abortion protections into the state constitution to add an additional safeguard against attacks.
But now, anti-choice politicians are exploiting the ballot measure’s viability loophole —blatantly ignoring the will of the voters.
This proposed bill labels both abortion patients and anyone who helps them leave the state as ‘traffickers’ of the fetus.
This development is a striking reminder that ballot measures are powerful protections, but without governing power, reproductive freedom remains in danger.
We must elect lawmakers, judges, and other leaders at every level who are committed to protecting our hard fought rights.
What starts in one state never stays there, and this bill will surely be replicated elsewhere in a matter of time. We cannot take our foot off the gas. Even in states where abortion is legally protected, like in Montana, we’re seeing renewed attacks.
The battle for our reproductive freedom continues to run through the states, where state houses serve as testing grounds for both anti-choice attacks and for pro-choice protections. Our programs remain laser focused on states like Montana, where we must build on our victories or risk sliding backwards.
Thank you for being right there with us,
Team Vote Pro-Choice
