** Pesticides in your food
------------------------------------------------------------

There are many routes of exposure to pesticides. Rural residents can suffer the effects of agricultural pesticide drift, and people in towns and cities can be exposed as a result of spraying in public spaces such as streets, pavements and parks. They are also in the water we drink and the food we consume.

Pesticides used in farming result in varying levels of chemical residues remaining in, or on, our food. Due to health concerns, each year the UK Government tests a range of food items for pesticide residues. Using data over a five-year period, we have produced a list of the ‘dirtiest’ and ‘cleanest’ fruit and vegetables. We’ve based the list on the number of samples that tested positive for residues of multiple pesticides.

Currently, safety limits are set for residues of individual pesticides and the issue of how multiple chemicals are interacting with each other is completely ignored. There is increasing evidence that one chemical has the potential to exacerbate the effects of another. This is know as the ‘cocktail effect’. It has long-been recognised as an area of concern in the UK but little has been done to protect human health from the array of pesticide residues that we are all exposed to every day.

It can be more expensive switching to an organic diet so we hope that by using the list provided you’ll be able to make more informed buying choices.

We are a small charity and endlessly struggle to raise funds.
Our small team of pesticide experts work hard to provide practical advice on how you can avoid the use of hazardous pesticides to better protect the health of you, your family and the natural environment.
We hope that you find our new pesticide residue list useful and ask that you consider making a donation to PAN UK in return.
We would never want to exclude anyone from using our resources on the basis of cost so if you don’t have the funds to donate please do still use our guide.
