Hi Folks,

Happy Black History Month! This month, we celebrate the innumerable ways in which Black Americans have shaped our nation since before its founding.

As the first Black Congresswoman elected from Alabama, a proud native of Selma, and the representative of Alabama’s Civil Rights district, I know that I stand on the shoulders of so many giants who courageously fought, bled, and died to make our society more just, equal and inclusive for all.

I take my responsibility to protect and advance their legacy very seriously.

That’s why I recently introduced the Rosa Parks Day Act which would create a federal holiday to celebrate one of Alabama’s Civil Rights “sheroes.” By refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, Rosa Parks sparked a movement that changed the very fabric of our nation.

 

At a time when some seek to whitewash our history and erase our progress, it is essential that we protect the legacy of extraordinary freedom fighters like Rosa Parks.

By designating December 1st as Rosa Parks Day, we can ensure that her bravery and heroism live on in American history forever.
