Walmart and Target walk back DEI commitments. What can you do?

Dear Green American,
At the 2025 Grammys, Global Impact Award winner Alicia Keys used her time at the mic to state, “DEI is not a threat, it’s a gift.” With Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) under attack from the Trump Administration, making the case for DEI to millions of people was inspiring.
Many companies, small and large, agree with Alicia Keys, and know that DEI creates a welcoming and innovative space that benefits employees, customers, and suppliers – it’s good for morale and for business. Most recently, Costco reiterated its support for DEI in response to attacks, saying: “Our efforts around diversity, equity and inclusion follow our code of ethics … and reinforce with everyone at our Company the importance of creating opportunities for all.”
Sadly, not all retailers followed Costco’s example. Walmart and Target both recently walked back their commitments to DEI. Walmart announced it’s “ending racial equity training programs for staff and evaluating programs designed to increase supplier diversity,” as well as its $100 million commitment to the Center for Racial Equity and activities supporting LGBTQ+ communities.
Target announced it concluded its three-year DEI goals, is rebranding its supplier diversity team to “supplier engagement,” and is ending its participation in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index.
Both companies were targets of right-wing attacks on DEI, but unlike Costco, Apple, JP Morgan Chase, Microsoft, and several other Fortune 500 companies, Walmart and Target caved on DEI.
As a consumer, you can use your dollars and your voice to let Target and Walmart know that their abandonment of DEI is not OK and you expect more from them. And make sure your dollars support Black-owned businesses that were relying on big box stores to give them access to wider markets.
