I grew up poor. That’s no secret. I know how important a job can be and how hard it is when you lose one.

I’m a veteran, too. A lot of my friends were killed and wounded. I know what it means to sacrifice for your country.

And, I depend on the VA. I came home and had to fight for care for myself and the guys I fought with. The VA is the largest health care provider in the United States, and we have a duty to make sure it meets veterans' needs.

Elon Musk and Donald Trump started firing thousands of public servants alongside 1000 VA staff last week and another 1400 VA staff yesterday. To put it bluntly, this is bullsh*t.

First off, it’s bad enough that these people are getting fired. Getting fired sucks. It’s one of the worst things that can happen to you.

But these people — many of them veterans themselves, many of them in service for decades, who joined the government to serve the public — are apparently getting fired by Elon’s DOGE stooges and their algorithms. At this point, Trump and Elon have fired more veterans than any organization in history.

They’re out to break everything the government does so they can privatize the VA and destroy Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. The rich get richer while everything gets more expensive for the rest of us.

That’s the play. That’s their move. And they’re pressing ahead.

Republicans in the House and Senate are working through their funding bills right now. They’re teeing up more massive cuts to critical government services, thousands more veterans fired, and trillions more in tax cuts for the wealthiest people on earth.

But we do not have to sit here and take it.

I am going to do whatever I can to stop them, but here’s the truth: I can’t do it on my own.

I came to the Senate to fight, and that’s what I’m going to do. But I need you with me if we’re going to make a difference.
