Hi friend,
I never thought I’d become an activist, and I never imagined myself suing the state of Texas.
But when I was 18 weeks pregnant, with a daughter my husband and I chose to name Willow, I began experiencing preterm prelabor rupture of membranes. Unfortunately, this was the same week that Texas’ abortion ban was triggered by the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision.
Even though doctors said “with complete certainty” that I would lose my baby, they were unable to provide me with the appropriate medical care — in this case, an abortion — because of Texas’ cruel ban. Instead, I was forced to enter septic shock. I spent a week in the hospital, almost died, and lost my ability to ever carry a pregnancy in the future.
I was extremely lucky to survive. Too many Texans don’t.
Unfortunately, stories like mine are becoming all too common due to Texas Republicans’ abortion ban. They don’t care if we live or die. Some already have.
That’s why I continue to advocate for reproductive freedoms. From suing the state of Texas to testifying before Congress, I’m fighting for a world where everyone has the right to access reproductive care — no matter what state they call home.
I’m so grateful to have the support of Texas Democrats, who have uplifted my voice throughout my activism journey. As our rights become even more compromised under the current administration, the work that Texas Democrats are doing could not be more important.
In these horrifying times, it is vital that we as Democrats come together and organize. So y’all, please join me next Wednesday, March 5th, for the Texas Trailblazers Block Party. I am so excited for this opportunity to be in community with you and our fellow changemakers from across Texas.
