Our This Is Our Lane campaign, led by Brady chief medical officer and Johns Hopkins trauma surgeon Dr. Joseph Sakran, initially distributed the guide to over 300,000 healthcare professionals. Each year, tens of thousands of people are impacted by gun violence, and firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in America. Additionally, we know that over HALF of clinicians report that they avoid discussing firearm access and safety due to concerns about feeling unprepared or alienating patients.
That’s where our resource guide comes in: It will fill the gap in education around firearms and provide research-based best practices, practical strategies, sample scripts, and downloadable educational resources to aid medical professionals in their discussions with patients. In turn, medical professionals can help prevent incidents of family fire — which includes unintentional shootings, firearm suicides, and firearm misuse — ultimately saving lives and reducing injuries.
When healthcare professionals ask about alcohol use or smoking, they are doing so to protect their patients and prevent life-threatening illnesses or scenarios — it’s not personal or political. Now, with the launch of this resource guide, we are empowering healthcare professionals to treat gun violence as the public health crisis it is and make discussions about firearm access and safety a part of routine care.

Celebrating Black History Month |
This week for Black History Month, we are featuring Mattie Scott, a gun violence survivor and president of Brady California. Preventing gun violence is personal for Mattie. In 1996, her son, George C. Scott, was shot and killed while attending a graduation party in his San Francisco neighborhood. George was only 24, and he was the father of two young kids.
A day later, Mattie had to call her grandson on his birthday and tell him his father was never coming home — a moment she describes as the hardest day of her life. But it was this devastation that pushed Mattie to dedicate her life to gun violence prevention.
As the president of Brady California, Mattie advocates and helps pass life-saving legislation that makes California communities safer for everyone. In the 2024 legislative session alone, this included three Brady-sponsored bills, including a landmark safe gun storage bill that has been hailed as one of the strongest in the nation. Mattie was also honored with the Women’s History Month award from San Francisco’s mayor and has worked closely with powerful gun violence prevention advocates, including Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris. “You have to meet with Mattie,” Harris said, her words ringing true for the many people Mattie has helped.

Gun Violence Prevention Victory in Virginia! |
Exciting news out of Virginia: 13 gun violence prevention bills have passed out of both the state house and senate and are headed to the governor’s desk! Among many other things, these life-saving bills will ban deadly assault weapons and ghost guns, mandate safe and secure firearm storage, and ban guns from college campuses. Brady and Team ENOUGH staff and grassroots leaders spent months advocating and testifying in support of these solutions, and dedicated grassroots activists like you called, emailed, and made your voices heard. We wouldn’t have been able to get these bills passed through the state legislature without you, John, so thank you! |
Donor Spotlight: Pellie Anderson |
This week, we are proud to feature Pellie Anderson — a gun safety advocate, former prosecutor and district attorney, and mom, who has been a Brady volunteer and donor since 2019. Pellie is currently a member of Brady's Northern California Regional Leadership Council, where she works alongside regional and national Brady leadership in support of our culture change efforts to promote the safe storage of firearms.
Her experience as a prosecutor and district attorney in Marin County inspired her commitment to gun violence prevention, especially as it pertains to domestic violence and suicide prevention. In her community, she has been instrumental in founding and launching the Marin Gun Safety Collaborative, which educates people, law enforcement, and other organizations on gun violence restraining orders (GVROs) and safe storage of firearms.
