House Bill 5i and Senate Bill 50ii would eliminate the permit requirement for carrying a concealed weapon in North Carolina. This would be a dangerous and deadly move in our state: in other states that have weakened or eliminated their concealed carry permit requirements, firearm homicides increased up to 10.8%,iii and states saw a 29% increase in firearm violent crime.iv
Why is Permitless Carry so deadly? Younger and untrained people who haven't passed a background check would now be legally carrying hidden, loaded handguns. In public. At a restaurant or bar, on the street, or sitting next to you at a concert or a place of worship. In 2023, lawmakers took away the background check for people buying handguns from private sellers - so now North Carolina could have possibly thousands more people carrying hidden handguns in public who have never passed a background check at ANY point, without ANY training.
Untrained, younger, and armed - without a background check. This is NOT what responsible gun ownership looks like. This will lead to more gun violence in North Carolina.
