Friends,
Democrats in Olympia are up to their usual tricks—spending more, regulating more, and fixing nothing. While some of the worst bills have been scrapped (for now), plenty of bad ideas are still moving forward.
Take HB 1540, which expands state-funded aid for homeless students to include tribal colleges. With a $10 billion deficit, you’d think lawmakers would focus on getting Washington’s financial house in order—not finding new ways to spend taxpayer dollars. Republican Rep. Travis Couture put it bluntly: “We have no money.” But that didn’t stop Democrats.
And let’s talk about crime. Washington’s streets are more dangerous than ever, but Democrats continue to refuse to reverse failed laws that let violent offenders off easy. They refuse to fix laws that have led to record-breaking car thefts, rampant shoplifting, and repeat offenders walking free. Meanwhile, criminals set up open-air drug markets with zero consequences, and law-abiding citizens are left to fend for themselves.
But there’s some good news: some of the worst bills were tossed out. A bill that would have banned police from pulling people over for expired tabs or broken taillights? Gone. A proposal to force dairy farmers to track cow burps for methane emissions? Dead. And an absurd attempt to ban wood-burning stoves? Defeated—for now.
At Shift WA, we expose both the good and the bad coming out of Olympia. But we need your help. The more Washingtonians know what’s happening, the more they can fight back.
Can you chip in today to help us hold these politicians accountable?
Thank you for standing with us,
