John,

At the People’s March, the people demanded justice for Michelle West. Today, we celebrate a victory: after 31 years of an unjust double life sentence + 50 years for a nonviolent drug charge, Michelle has been granted clemency.

This win belongs to The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls, who have fought relentlessly to free Michelle and so many others. But they’re not stopping here—because the fight is far from over.

See their message below, and join us in celebrating this win and fueling the next one.

Hello Marchers,

For over a decade, The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls has been fighting to end the incarceration of women and girls. Founded by incarcerated women in 2010, we work to dismantle the systems that cage women and separate families.

Today, we celebrate Michelle West’s clemency after serving 31 years of a double life sentence + 50 years for a nonviolent drug conspiracy charge. Her case is one of many injustices caused by a system that disproportionately punishes women, especially mothers.

But our work is far from over. 40 states are building new women’s prisons, and with attacks on reproductive rights and private prison expansion, more women and girls will be criminalized. We refuse to let this happen.

We are building the FreeHer Institute to fight back. We need your support. Please donate today to help us create real solutions, end incarceration, and build thriving communities.

John, Michelle’s freedom is proof that when we fight together, we win. But the fight isn’t over. More women remain behind bars in a system designed to criminalize them. Let’s build on this momentum and win more.

Support the FreeHer Institute today. Stay engaged. Keep pushing.

In solidarity,
