![]() John, We think of plastic bottles as temporary objects, but the truth is, they last longer than us. Every bit of plastic that ends up in the ocean can persist for centuries, ending up in the mouth of a sea turtle, or even the stomach of a baby seal.1 Coca-Cola has the chance to make a huge dent in the world's amount of plastic waste, but instead, it has backtracked on its commitment to create more reusable bottles.2 We can't let Coca-Cola abandon its goals. The company's legacy should be tasty soft drinks, not thousands of tons of waste poisoning our oceans for centuries to come. Join us in telling Coca-Cola to recommit to reducing single-use plastic. Thank you, Ellen Montgomery John, Nothing beats the convenience of single-use plastic. But the more we learn, the more we see that convenience comes at a steep price for the places and wildlife we love: massive amounts of plastic waste and pollution. That's why we were excited when Coca-Cola announced in 2022 that it would make at least 25% of its beverage containers refillable or returnable by 2030. But now, Coca-Cola is going back on its promise.1 Coca-Cola, the world's biggest plastic polluter, took steps to turn its reputation around in 2022 when it committed to using refillable or returnable bottles for at least 25% of global sales by 2030.2,3 Now, the company is backtracking. Its updated plan scraps its commitment to reusable bottles and dilutes its recycling goals as well, aiming to use 35% to 40% recycled material by 2035 rather than 50% by 2030.4 By watering down its commitments and refocusing its goals onto recycling, Coca-Cola is avoiding the real solution to our plastic pollution crisis: that we must stop producing so much plastic in the first place. We don't have to live in a world where our oceans are choked in a tide of plastic, where seal pups mistake plastic wrappers for food, and hermit crabs make their homes out of plastic trash instead of shells.5,6 Coca-Cola can help bring that cleaner, more sustainable world closer to reality.
