Greetings, readers!
This week’s Leadership newsletter returns to the chaos unfolding in the nonprofit sector after various executive orders and memoranda by the Trump administration seeking to cut funding and/or crack down on practices and values like diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
First, a new “pulse” survey by the Communications Network finds widespread fear and uncertainty among nonprofits, leading some to self-censor when it comes to “controversial” language they’ve used on their website, social media, or mission statements.
Next, a new lawsuit brought by nonprofits challenges the Trump administration’s anti-equity moves, curtailing nonprofits’ right to free speech.
Then, our own Rebekah Barber looks into faith-based nonprofits facing furloughs in response to federal funding freezes and the shutdown of USAID, stifling refugee resettlement efforts.
Last but not least, a reminder that we’ve started a new fundraising advice column, “Ask Rhea.” We hope you’ll submit questions for Rhea to answer.
As always, thanks so much for reading. Please feel free to email me with tips, pitches, and feedback at [email protected].
Yours truly,
Isaiah Thompson
