John, Happy Black History Month!

From the signing of the Declaration of Independence to the abolitionist movement, Philadelphia was one of the foremost cities in the fight for freedom and equality, and the birthplace for the enduring ideals of democracy, liberty, and justice. It’s no coincidence that our city, as the birthplace of freedom, has also been a nurturing ground for Black excellence.

Our history is rooted deeply in the strength, resilience, and achievements of the Black community. From the arts to education, from politics to business, we have been on the frontlines shaping the future, breaking barriers, and lifting up all of America.

But Black history isn’t just about the past — it’s about the present and the future as well. Today, Black Philadelphians continue to break new ground and inspire millions. Black excellence is thriving in every field, and our city continues to be a launchpad for greatness.

While we honor this rich legacy, we must also acknowledge that the work is far from over. This is why I am focused on the systemic inequities in education, healthcare, housing, and economic opportunity.

As the first woman and first Black woman to serve as Mayor of Philadelphia, I am honored to stand on the shoulders of the trailblazers who came before me, and to work alongside so many incredible leaders, and advocates, and citizens in the fight for a brighter future for our city.

Philadelphia, Black history is our history. This month — and every month — let us take time to honor and celebrate the incredible legacy and contributions of Black Americans.

— Mayor Cherelle Parker
