And state legislatures can strengthen our public schools or make it harder for students to get the education they need. 

At the state level, elected leaders can decide whether to follow the lead of the extreme far right in Washington — so it’s crucial that state-level leaders fairly represent the will of the people. And fair representation starts with fair maps.

State-level gerrymandering can set off a dangerous domino effect — and here’s exactly how it works:

→ When gerrymandered maps are in place, the outcomes of elections don’t represent the will of the voters. 

→ When the will of the voters is misrepresented, state legislatures can become lopsided and out-of-touch.

→ When those out-of-touch legislators go unchecked, they can pass extreme bills that go against our shared, broadly popular values on issues like reproductive freedom, access to health care, LGBTQ+ rights, public education, voting rights, climate change, and more.

It’s clear that we can’t expect much positive change from Washington right now — but state governments can show a better path forward. And we need to continue working to stop gerrymandering once and for all so we can fight for the values we care about most.
