This is a longer email, but I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read it. I want to take a moment to share a bit more of my story with you, why I ran for DNC Chair, and why I’m hoping to earn your investment in our Party as we rebuild after a tough election cycle.
I am the first son of a single mom who had me when she was 15 years old, and who was raising four kids by the time she was 20. We were in and out of shelters, and we knew what poverty felt like. We saw what my mom sacrificed to make sure we could have a warm dinner most nights.
Because my mom gave a damn about us, and because my community gave a damn about our family, it meant we had a chance. I ended up being the first kid in my family to go to college and get a degree.
I got involved in politics because I believe our government should give a damn, too.
Too many people view politics as a sport – something that’s just about winning or losing. But to me, and to millions of families, this is personal. Whether we win or lose has a real impact on people’s lives.
Just look at what we’re seeing right now: Donald Trump is openly coming after public schools and child care. He’s going after nursing homes and community health clinics and farmers. His policies are raising prices for millions of people, on necessities like food and gas, and doing nothing to help working families.
If Donald Trump were president when I was a kid, I wouldn’t be here today.
All of what he is doing has a real impact on people — and it’s why it’s more important than ever that we elect as many Democrats as possible, all over the country, who are willing to stand up and check Trump’s power in any way they can.
That’s my vision for our Party: organizing against Trump and his allies’ harmful agenda, competing in every ZIP code, and building the long-term party infrastructure we’ll need to elect Democrats everywhere.
To do that, I’m asking for your help. Can you make an investment now in the future of the Democratic Party?
