Miller-Meeks: Expanding Health Care Access for Iowans Iowans deserve health care that’s accessible, affordable, and free of bureaucratic nonsense. As a physician and the representative of Iowa’s First District, I’ve made that my mission. This past week, I introduced two bipartisan bills to address critical health care gaps. My focus is on practical, market-driven solutions that empower families—here in Iowa and nationwide. On February 19, I partnered with Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) to launch the Increasing Access to Dental Insurance Act. Oral health is important to overall wellness, yet some Iowans can’t afford dental care. Poor dental health may contribute to heart disease, diabetes, and kidney issues. The federal marketplace currently blocks standalone dental plans unless tied to a health plan thereby limiting competition and access. Iowa’s state-based marketplace already offers this flexibility, and it works. My bill, introduced last week, extends that option nationwide, ensuring Iowans and Americans get affordable dental coverage without red tape. On February 21, I reintroduced the Accelerating Kids’ Access to Care Act with Rep. Lori Trahan (D-MA), building on its unanimous House passage last Congress. This bill helps Iowa kids with complex conditions—like cancer or rare diseases—access out-of-state specialists. In Davenport and across Iowa’s First District, families face delays navigating Medicaid’s cumbersome process for cross-state care. That’s unacceptable. Our legislation, unveiled recently, streamlines provider enrollment, cutting wait times while preserving safeguards. With 216 organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics backing it, it’s a lifeline for Iowa families when every second counts. Iowa’s rural core, from Scott County to Mahaska County demands health care that works—not partisan gridlock. As a physician who’s served Iowans, I’m delivering solutions rooted in Iowa values: practical, affordable and compassionate. The Increasing Access to Dental Insurance Act boosts choice and competition, while the Accelerating Kids’ Access to Care Act cuts bureaucracy to save lives. Congress must act fast on these proposals. Iowans deserve a system that meets their needs—whether it’s a dental checkup in Iowa City or specialized care beyond our borders. I’ll keep fighting as your voice in Washington.
