Like many of you, 350Brooklyn is alarmed by the ongoing assault on our democracy. We are witnessing blatant violations of constitutional norms and a systematic dismantling of fundamental government institutions, environmental protections, financial regulations, personal privacy, individual rights, and democratic global alliances. We urge everyone to stay engaged by calling your representatives, taking to the streets, and using the resources of organizations with expertise in democratic resistance.

As part of our commitment, each newsletter will now include a section called “Resist” to highlight ways to combat the current federal administration's efforts to undermine our mission of fighting for a world that is just, equitable, and sustainable, and where all beings can thrive.

Today’s call to action focuses on using our economic power to fight back against big businesses supporting the new regime.

Green finance: align your money with your values

Tuesday, February 25th, 7pm

Did you know that most people's carbon footprint largely comes from their bank account and retirement savings? The six largest U.S. banks—Chase, Bank of America, Citi, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley—loaned more than $1.8 trillion for fossil fuel industry expansion from 2016 to 2023. Investing in Climate Chaos reports that Vanguard, BlackRock, State Street, and Capital Group are the largest investors in fossil fuels. Learn how to move your finances out of the fossil fuel industry and into a sustainable world by signing up for a Zoom workshop on Tuesday, February 25th at 7pm, led by GreenFaith financial expert Michael Richardson.

Calling all podcast editors!

350Brooklyn's podcast Climate Check is growing and we need more editors! Experience producing audio or working on a podcast is preferred, but we happily welcome all who are interested. Email the Climate Check team at [email protected] to get more info.

Power Hour: your questions answered!

Q: What if my elected officials are hostile to climate action? Is there any point in calling them?

A: Yes! It’s helpful to demonstrate that their constituents care about climate and are expecting better from them. Your pressure may help soften their opposition to climate legislation. There are other ways to have an impact, too—such as by calling the legislative leaders of each house and members of key committees. We’ll provide you with updated actions every week. Join Power Hour on Mondays at noon!

RESIST!

24-HOUR ECONOMIC BLACKOUT

Friday, February 28th, 12 am - 11:59 pm

Corporate donors buy our politicians and push harmful policies that benefit the wealthy at the expense of the rest of us. 350Brooklyn urges you to resist these unconscionable corporations by joining a national economic boycott initiated by The People's Union. For 24 hours beginning Friday, February 28th, we will collectively refrain from purchasing from large retailers and avoid using credit cards. Instead, let’s support small, local businesses we know and trust.

WHEN:
Friday, February 28th, from midnight until 11:59 pm — a full 24 hours!

WHAT NOT TO DO:

  • Do not make any purchases.
  • Do not shop online or in-store.
  • No Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy—nowhere!
  • Do not spend money on fast food, gas, or major retailers.
  • Do not use credit or debit cards for non-essential spending.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  • Only buy essentials if absolutely necessary (food, medicine, emergency supplies).
  • If you must spend, only support small, local businesses.

SPREAD THE MESSAGE:
Talk about it, post about it, and document your participation!

WHY THIS MATTERS:
Corporations and banks prioritize profit above all else. If we disrupt the economy for just one day, it sends a powerful message. If they don’t listen, we will extend the next blackout. The overconsumption of goods is also a primary driver of climate and ecological breakdown.

Together, we can take a stand. Our voices—and our choices—matter.

FROM OUR FRIENDS AND ALLIES

Tell Hochul no! to Iroquois pipeline expansion

Earlier this month, Governor Hochul approved permitting for the Iroquois pipeline fracked gas expansion—the first fossil fuel expansion project approved in New York State since 2016. Expansion will double the size of dirty compressor stations in the towns of Athens and Dover, spewing more carcinogens and climate-warming methane into the air. It also moves us in the wrong direction at a time when New York should be taking the lead on climate. Tell Hochul you oppose this expansion by signing this letter.
